If you have read or heard the news lately, you probably already heard about a new mosquito virus, which has just recently reached the US and is now infecting people in several states. This mosquito-transmitted virus is called, “Chikungunya” and a lab in Raleigh, NC, has recently taken over the task, of developing a vaccine that helps to protect us from this virus.
Specialists believe people who travelled to the Caribbean in recent months were infected with the virus and brought it back to the US. Currently people in the Carolinas, Florida and Texas, have been diagnosed with the virus.
Since the summer heat is allowing mosquitoes to breed, the lab in Raleigh, NC, is working hard to find a vaccine that works, before this becomes a very serious problem. The Chikungunya virus is in the same category as the Nile virus and Dengue fever, as they can all happen from a mosquito bite.
Scientists, also agree that it is very likely to see more outbreaks of this virus in the US during the next couple of months and throughout next year, which is why a vaccine is of utter importance. The Chikungunya virus has a lot of similarities to the Dengue virus and experts state that it can also put a person in bed for a few days.
Since it is not possible to kill all mosquitoes, as the ecosystems in our planet would fail, we must be careful when we are outdoors and exposed to mosquitoes, especially now that more viruses are being brought into the country. Hopefully, the new vaccines will be ready soon and this does not become a problem that we can no longer control.
